Meet Sami, the expert behind ScanX ultrasound machine servicing

Share it

Did you know that at ScanX, we have a dedicated Machine Servicing Department? Every day without your scanner impacts your business, practice or breeding programme, which is why we have a dedicated engineer focused on getting your equipment back up and running as quickly as possible through expert in-house servicing and repairs.

At ScanX, we are always looking for opportunities to develop our team’s expertise through further training. This is especially important within our Machine Servicing Department, where up to date technical knowledge allows us to diagnose faults more efficiently and complete more repairs in house. Our ultrasound service engineer, Sami, has recently completed additional specialist training to further expand his knowledge and skills.

What to expect from the ScanX servicing process

1- Start by visiting the Machine Servicing page on our website and completing the simple service request form. This gives Sami valuable information about the fault before the machine even arrives.

From there, the process is straightforward.

2- We review the information provided and may ask for additional details, photographs or videos to better understand the fault and how the issue behaves.

3 a) In many cases, we can attempt to resolve the problem remotely before arranging a repair.

b) If the fault cannot be fixed remotely, we arrange collection of the machine on a convenient day for the customer.

4) Once the machine arrives at ScanX, Sami carries out an initial diagnosis to identify the problem and provide an estimated repair timescale.

5 a) If the issue is well known and we have the required parts in stock, repairs can often be completed within a single day. Our collection and delivery service is next working day, helping to keep turnaround times as short as possible.

b) Where specialist parts need to be ordered from the manufacturer, or where the fault is intermittent or requires detailed board level diagnosis, repairs can take between two and four weeks. In every case, we take the time to identify the exact fault before ordering parts or providing a repair quotation.

Why remote support is often the first step

Where there is no obvious hardware damage, Sami will usually attempt a remote diagnosis first. This approach can often resolve software or configuration issues without the need for the machine to leave the customer, saving valuable time unnecessary transport. Only when remote troubleshooting cannot resolve the problem do we arrange collection for further investigation.

The most common ultrasound machine issues

Over the years, Sami has seen a number of faults appear more frequently than others. Fortunately, many can be prevented with careful handling and regular maintenance.

Probe cable damage

Probe cables should never be pulled, twisted or sharply bent. It is also important never to lift or carry the ultrasound machine using the probe or its cable.

Probe connector damage

Always handle probe connectors carefully when connecting or disconnecting them. Check they are correctly aligned before inserting them and never force a connector into place.

As newer wireless probe technology becomes more widely used, cable and connector damage should become less common. ScanX’s latest wireless probe also allows users to switch between wired and wireless operation, providing greater flexibility.

Machine overheating

Keep ventilation openings clear at all times. Avoid placing the machine on surfaces that restrict airflow and do not operate it in excessively hot or poorly ventilated environments.

Display damage

Treat the display with care. Avoid dropping the machine, knocking the screen or placing heavy objects on it.

Open and close the screen gently every time. Excessive force or repeated rough handling can damage both the hinges and the display cable.

Condensation and moisture

One issue that is often overlooked is condensation.

If an ultrasound machine has been transported from a cold environment into a warm building, allow it to reach room temperature before switching it on. Moisture can form inside the machine and damage sensitive electronic components if powered up too soon.

This is particularly important during cold or wet weather.

Cleaning and routine servicing

Regular cleaning should always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

For larger ultrasound systems, or machines requiring internal cleaning, maintenance or inspection, it is always advisable to use an authorised service centre rather than attempting internal cleaning or repairs yourself.

Sami’s top tip

One of the simplest ways to avoid unnecessary faults is to always use the original power supply, adapter and cable supplied with your machine. Sami regularly sees machines reported as faulty when the problem is actually caused by an incompatible replacement power supply. Using the correct charger every time can prevent these avoidable issues.

For higher value ultrasound machines, Sami also recommends considering appropriate insurance cover. While many faults can be repaired, insurance can provide valuable protection should accidental damage or more significant repairs ever be required.

Here when you need us

Our Machine Servicing Department is here to make the repair process as straightforward as possible, from initial diagnosis through to repair and return.

Whether we can solve the issue remotely or complete an in house repair, our goal is always the same: reduce downtime, provide clear communication throughout the process and return your ultrasound machine as quickly as possible so you can get back to doing what you do best.
