Avoid Dog Scan Scams: Why Training Matters

Share it

If you’re considering a career in animal ultrasound or you’re simply searching for a trustworthy dog pregnancy scan, one thing is clear: training matters. In fact, it’s the difference between providing accurate, ethical care and accidentally misleading pet owners at one of the most emotionally vulnerable moments of their journey.

At PUM, we don’t just train paraprofessional scanners- we raise the bar. Through the Animal Ultrasound Association (AUA), we deliver the only courses in the world written and taught by a qualified sonographer actively working in the field. That’s not just a detail. It’s the core of everything we do.

And here’s why that matters, whether you’re booking a scan or thinking of becoming a scanner yourself.

The Emotional Trap of False Hope

Imagine this: you’ve bred your dog, waited the suggested 30 days, and booked a pregnancy scan. You’re nervous, excited, hopeful. Then the scanner tells you there are no puppies. It’s not the news you wanted, and the temptation to seek a second opinion creeps in.

But that’s where things can start to unravel.

Confirmation bias is a well-documented psychological phenomenon; when we deeply want something to be true, we unconsciously seek out information that confirms our hopes, ignoring signs that suggest otherwise. It’s the same mindset that can lead vulnerable people to fall for scams that, deep down, they know aren’t quite right.

This kind of thinking is particularly risky when it comes to dog pregnancy scanning. The market is full of people using cheap, unreliable equipment with little or no training. Sadly, it only takes one inaccurate scan to cause chaos- emotionally and financially- for the pet owner, and reputational damage for the scanner involved.

A Real-World Example

One woman recently contacted Charmaine Baker, an AUA-trained scanner for a routine scan at 31 days. The scanner found no evidence of pregnancy and explained the findings clearly and professionally. Unhappy with the result, the woman then approached a second scanner, one who had not completed any formal training.

This untrained scanner told her what she wanted to hear: “Yes, your dog is pregnant. The first scan must have had the wrong settings.” Delighted, the woman sent the images back to Charmaine, hoping for clarification.

But the images told a different story entirely. The supposed “foetal sacs” were, in fact, cross sections of loops of small intestine, one of the most common and well-documented mistakes made by inexperienced scanners, and it’s easy to see why when you look at the image below:

Above: To the untrained eye, these intestinal cross sections do appear similar to foetal sacs, which is why AUA courses teach trainees exactly how to spot the difference.

Catherine Stowell, founder of the AUA and a qualified sonographer, had to personally step in to break the news: there were no puppies. The second scan had offered false hope, not professional assurance.

Training That Makes a Difference

This is why the AUA exists– to ensure that paraprofessional scanners across the UK and beyond are held to the highest possible standard. Our members are trained using exacting clinical principles and high-quality machines. That’s what sets us apart.

If you’re a breeder or pet owner searching for a reliable scan, don’t leave it to chance. The AUA Member Directory is your go-to resource, allowing you to search by postcode for a qualified, accredited scanner in your area. When you book with an AUA member, you’re booking with confidence.

And if you’re someone looking to enter the field, ask yourself: do you want to be the scanner giving real answers, or the one who accidentally offers false hope?

Why Choose AUA Training?

At PUM, our training courses go far beyond the basics. We cover:

  • How to identify pregnancy and foetal viability
  • How to interpret ultrasound images to spot incidental findings
  • Machine settings and optimisation techniques
  • Common scanning mistakes and how to avoid them
  • Ongoing mentoring and support for life from qualified sonographers

Whether you’re starting out or advancing your skills, AUA training equips you to make a genuine difference for pets, owners, and your own professional reputation.

Final Word

The world of animal pregnancy scanning is full of emotional highs and lows. For owners, it’s about dreams, plans, and hope. For scanners, it’s about delivering clarity, not comfort.

That’s why AUA-accredited training isn’t just a certificate. It’s a responsibility. And one that every ethical scanner should be proud to carry.
