Created in partnership with Maternal and Childhealth Advocacy International (MCAI)—a charity with decades of experience delivering emergency maternal and child healthcare—this course offers essential, field-ready training in obstetric ultrasound.

Designed specifically for midwives, nurses, outreach trainers, and other healthcare workers operating in low-resource or crisis-affected settings, the course focuses on the knowledge and techniques needed to perform focused obstetric scans, even with minimal equipment.

Whether you’re working in a rural clinic, a mobile outreach team, a conflict zone, or a refugee setting, this course is about giving you the tools to assess pregnancy safely, effectively, and confidently.

What the Course Covers

Over the course of 2+ hours of high-quality, on-demand content, you’ll learn how to:

  • Identify key fetal and placental anatomy, including fetal heart, spine, limbs, head, and lie

  • Manipulate your probe to obtain and optimise core obstetric views, even with limited imaging equipment

  • Recognise red flags—such as multiple pregnancy, abnormal lie, low amniotic fluid, or non-viable pregnancy—that could indicate complications requiring urgent referral

  • Adapt ultrasound use to local realities, including how to maximise accuracy with handheld or portable machines

  • Build confidence in making clinical decisions based on what you see, so you can intervene when it matters most

No prior ultrasound experience is required—this course is designed to meet you where you are, and to grow your skills step by step.

Why This Training Matters

In many parts of the world, obstetric ultrasound is still out of reach—due to a lack of machines, training, or both. Yet the ability to scan a pregnant patient, even just once, can be the difference between life and death for mother and baby.

This course exists to bridge that gap. It’s not designed for hospital-based specialists with access to high-end equipment—it’s for the midwife in a tent hospital, the outreach nurse with a backpack scanner, the community trainer teaching others to care.

3 experts by your side

The course is led by a team with both deep clinical expertise and humanitarian field experience:

  • Yvette Lovis, Clinical Specialist Obstetric Sonographer, is your lead educator, offering clear, practical demonstrations backed by years of frontline teaching

  • Dr Brigid Hayden, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, brings essential insights on clinical context and decision-making in maternal care

  • Professor David Southall, Founder of MCAI and Professor of Paediatrics, draws on decades of experience delivering and supporting care in conflict zones and low-resource hospitals around the world

Their collective experience spans sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, the Balkans, and beyond, ensuring this course reflects real-world complexity, not idealised scenarios.

All profits go directly to charity

All profits from this course go directly to Maternal and Childhealth Advocacy International (MCAI), (SC043467) working to save the lives of pregnant women, children, and babies in some of the world’s most dangerous and under-resourced regions.

Your enrolment funds real, ongoing work in countries like Liberia, Cameroon, The Gambia, Ukraine, Gaza, and others—where MCAI supports health worker training, essential equipment, and humanitarian interventions.

This is training that doesn’t just change your practice—it helps change the world.
