The Ultimate Microscope Buying Guide.
If you’re considering cytology as an additional service to your business, then getting the right microscope for your needs is crucial. In the right hands, a capable microscope like the ScopeX 3 Lens Microscope can even be used for semen analysis (although it’s true that the iSperm is a lot less hassle for this kind of work)! Cytology is also the safest method for determining the stage of a bitch’s oestrus cycle. While it may be a delicate process that requires skill and patience, it does not require drawing blood (this is necessary for progesterone testing, and it is illegal for anyone other than a qualified vet to do this for obvious reasons). But if you’re new to this side of things then how do you find the best equipment? Read on to discover our professional advice on what to look out for!
1- What magnification options does it come with?
The most popular microscopes are compound microscopes, which traditionally have 1-4 optical lenses, and really you should
aim to have one that has 3-4 optical lenses to give you the widest range possible for sample analysis. For example, 4X, 10X,
20X to 40X. 4X would be your lowest magnification, and 40X being your biggest magnification. The ScopeX comes equipped
with 3 lenses for 4x, 10x and 20x magnification.
2- Consider how you’d like to view your images.
Microscopes can have a single monocular eyepiece, two eyepieces or a digital display. Most breeders will use digital displays
due to their ease of use, whereas microscopes with eyepieces are more commonly found in veterinary practice.
3- What kind of samples will you be analysing?
Most slides can be looked at on a cool table, but if your samples are temperature sensitive (such as semen) you will
need access to a microscope with a heated table. Therefore care must be taken here to ensure the sample is kept at a
consistent 37 degree temperature; any warmer and the samples will become damaged and produce inaccurate results.
So, if you’re looking at heated microscopes ensure the temperature reaches no higher than 37 degrees.
4- What conditions will the microscope be used in?
Do you intend to use the microscope in your own home, or will you be transporting it to remote sites? For traveling to clients
it’s a must that you have a sturdy, protective carry case.
